How can you stop unauthorized inquiries on credit report? |
It is my understanding that I can ask the credit bureaus to not allow inquiries to my credit file without my prior approval. Does anyone know anything about this or a source for a good form letter? Thanks. There are 2 types of inquiries. A Soft Inquiry is when a company pulls limited information for pre-approval items such as the credit card and insurance offers you get. To stop these you can go to http://www.optoutprescreen.com and request that your name be taken off of these lists. A Hard Inquiry is when you have requested new credit. So the only way for these to occur is if you do approve it. However, if you feel you may have some identity theft concerns you can place a fraud alert on your report for 90 days. This is absolutely free to do and when you contact one company they will notify the other 2. If you need one longer than 90 days, you can get it for 7 years. If you request the 7 year one you may need to show proof of identity theft such as a police report. Source(s): http://www.transunion.com/corporate/pers... No such facility here in UK. If you try to block inquiries, how do you expect to get credit or whatever facility it is you are seeking In some states you can put a "freeze" on you credit report. That means that NOBODY can get your credit report unless you consent. Check with the credit bureau to see if you are in one of these states. I recommend you do this to protect you from identity theft. OC1999 stole my answer. He is correct. No one can do a hard inquiry unless they have a permissible purpose. Which would be if you are applying for credit or if you already have a line of credit with someone, such as a credit card company and they are checking to assess their risk. OC1999 has a GREAT answer... the opt out thing works, too! |
