How can I find out what credit score is needed to rent a car? |
I was told by the people at Hertz to call Equifax, but unless you are a member of theirs, you can't get a direct line. Someone please help! If you were denied "credit" in the form of being told you can't rent a car because of your credit score...they are required to provide you with a name address and phone number of the credit reporting agency that led them to make the decision to turn you down. They legally cannot just tell you to call equifax and dismiss you. Call the manager and ask him/her exactly what their requirements are for renting a car and report the employee who flipantly dismissed you. PS I have a credit score of 610 and I was able to rent a car in June for a week with no problem... ask hertz I don't think there's a "minimum" score or anything... It just needs to be considered "good" by the company. As long as you at least HAVE some credit and it's decent, you should be fine. Have you had a credit card, loan, financed car or mortgage for at least a year or so? Have you always paid it off on time? If so, you should be ok to rent a car... If you don't have a credit card or anything and haven't started building up credit, or you are late on payments, miss payments, or only pay the minimum each month... Then they might not want to trust you with a couple-thousand-dollar car... Just for liability reasons... You also need to be at least 25 or something to rent a car. If you have a credit card with sufficient available balance, I don't think they check your credit score. To just "Rent" a car you need to be able to meet their minimum deposit requirements. That is you are old enough to rent a car, which in most cases is 25 or older for no restrictions. In some cases you might be able to rent if you are at least 21. Then there is the deposit, which is about $200-$250 or the estimated cost of the rental, which ever is more. You need to have at least this amount available on a credit card when you rent. You also must have a clean driving record, which they do check but has nothing to do with your credit score. So I am not sure why Hertz would have you call Equifax. Unless, you don't have a credit card, they may have tried to have you do a cash rental. For this they may run your credit to determine if they will rent to you. If you were declined because of this they must send you a letter in the mail stating the reasons why. |
