Does Credit Score go down if no activity on the cards for a while?

My husband has multiple cards that have high interests, and he was late on payments a couple of times in the past his score went down. So we paid them off in the past few months, and his score gradually went up.

Since we paid them off, he's been trying not to use any of those cards for a while. Then he noticed today that his credit score went down by 20. Does the credit score go down if he doesn't use any of the cards at all? Does he still have to use any of the cards and pay on time to keep his score up?

thank you for your help:)

It cost money for your credit card companies to report. If there isnt anything to report, they dont report. So its not helping you credit.

You want to keep something on your credit cards. But never more then 20-25%. If you keep it around 10-15% it will keep a running balance. Thus they will report every month and your credit score will improve.

So to answer your question simply. Yes. Only because he isnt getting any new good credit.
I'd call the three credit bureaus and find out why
if you use your cards every 6 months they will continue to report positively
