I thought student loan debt was "good" debt!? |
My car loan application was rejected by my credit union of 15 years because I owe student loans. I have no other debt, and have an MA and work in my field. Graduated a year ago. WTF? As I understand student loans, it doesn't get treated like all other debt. It doesn't get factored in to your credit score. Also if you have no other debt, that can lower your score. The way they figure your FICO almost requires you to have debt. The point of it is that they want to see you have debt and using it wisely. This is also the reason why somebody just starting out can't get a good rate. They don't have pre-existing debt and haven't demonstrated that they know how to handle it. Student loans are special cases. They are one of the few things that can't be discharged when you declare bankruptcy. A debt is only as good as the promise followed by the action to pay it off. I do not understand why you didn't get approved. Me and my husband both have student loans (mine is high due to a private school) and we were just approved and bought a new car. Maybe the problem was you debt to income ratio or perhaps you do not have an adequate payment history with those student loans. As far as student loans being "good debt" they kind of are because they are in the installment loan category rather than revolving category which are credit cards PLUS you can use the interest you pay during tax season. I would recommend you getting your credit report which you can do free once per year to make sure nothing is on it that may be a surprise to you. Good luck |
