Best dental insurance in San Diego? What do you use and are you happy?

Unless you can get on a group dental plan there is no good dental insurance. The average dental insurance has a $50 deductible per year and a maximum that they'll pay of $750 to $1500 per year. There is also a waiting period for almost everything of 6 to 36 months, depending upon the plan. After you've paid the $30 to $60 per month premium during the waiting period you then have co-insurance of 20% to 50%.

I'm an insurance agent and I don't have dental insurance. I have a dental discount fee for service plan that gives you discounts with no waiting period, no yearly maximum and no deductibles. One word of caution if you get on one of these plans. Search out the dentist prior to signing up and give them a call to make sure they're still on the plan.

Delta Dental is one of the larger providers of Dental Insurance, and it is offered in California.

It is my understanding that this is a PPO, in other words, a network based plan, so your have better benefits for using in-network dentist, vs. out-of-network dentist, so you will be encourage to use in-network, so you get your best benefits.

There may be a Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion, which you can expect with any medical insurance, a Pre-Existing Condition is any condition or treatment, of an injury or illness that you have sought medical attention or advise with X amount of months prior to the policies effective date, may be excluded for X amount of months after the effective date.

Generally this is 6/6, 6/12, or 12/12

There are also discount plans, keep in mind that a discount plan is just that, it is not medical insurance, I would avoid these at all cost...
