I have a minor toothache and no dental insurance. What should I do?

The pain is low, buts more noticable when I eat. I have not been to the dentist in years, have always been afraid to go, but now I feel like I have to. I probably don't have enough cash on me at the moment to pay for it all now.

It could just be a cavity that would be reliatively inexpensive to fix - like under $200 for almost any filling. Don't wait until you end up losing the tooth because you can't afford a roto canal treatment.

Many dentists are agreeable to payment arrangements. Just ask.
Hi, sorry you don't have dental insurance. However, many dentists have arrangements with loan companies like Capital One for example. It is just like buying a car. You know the price you are responsible for then you apply for the loan. The bank pays the dentist, then you repay the loan for about 12 months. Easy to do, and many do it. My dentist I work with pays the interest for the first 6 months to help out his patients. If you don't want to do that...then go to your nearest dental school or public health hospital.
Head my advice...if your mouth is not healthy then neither is your body. You could be at serious risk for a nasty infection and possible death like that 12 y.o. boy from Maryland a few months ago. His cavity spread to his brain. "For want of a dentist" Washington Post online is where I read the story.
Be Well
Call your local dental association and ask them if they can
refer you to some dentists that charge on a sliding scale. Often they will work with you on a billing program, taking pay-
ments, often based on what you can afford.
You can also check with the local Medicaid program thru
your county medical program, and see if what you earn would
be low enough to qualify for their free medical and dental
programs. I'm sure they can tell you over the phone. You
basically have to start calling around, unless you can get a
recommendation from someone you know on who they go to.
That's no guarantee you'd like that dentist, but it helps to get
into a clinic anyway. Honest dentists are hard to find. I know
from experiences I've had. They all want the big bucks for
selling you crowns that maybe you don't really need. I've been
there and done that many times unknowingly at first.
You can also go thru the local dental college, if there is one
thru a university or college. There is often quite a waiting list
tho. And it sounds like you need immediate help since the
decay is near your root already to hurt. Unless it is an area
where the gums are receding. That can also cause some
pain. Buy some Sensydine toothpaste and see if that will
help. Often it does til you can afford to see a dentist. Oil of
cloves is another temporary fix.
Good luck!
Make payment arrangements with a dentist
You only get one set of teeth ... after that you get dentures (if you can afford them)
Garlic: Garlic is one of most effective of several home remedies for toothache. A clove of garlic with a little rock salt should be placed on the affected tooth. It will relieve the pain and, sometimes, may even cure it. A clove should also be chewed daily in the morning. It will make the teeth strong and healthy.

Onion: Latest research has confirmed the bactericidal properties of onion. If a person consumes one raw onion every day by thorough mastication, he will be protected from a host of tooth disorders. Chewing raw onion for three minutes is sufficient to kill all the germs in the mouth. Toothache is often allayed by placing a small piece of onion on the bad tooth or gum.

Lime: Lime, as a rich source of vitamin C, is useful in maintaining the health of the teeth and other bones of the body. It prevents decay and loosening of the teeth, dental caries, toothache, and bleeding of the gums.

Wheat Grass: The juice of wheat grass acts as an excellent mouthwash for tooth decay and toothache. Wheat grass can be chewed with beneficial results. It draws out toxins from the gums and thus checks bacterial growth.

Asafoetida: The use of asafetida has been found useful in alleviating toothache. It should be pestled in lemon juice and slightly heated. A cotton swab should be soaked in this lotion and placed in the cavity of the tooth. It will relieve pain quickly.

Bay Berry: A paste of the bark of bay berry should be made with vinegar. This paste, applied on the affected tooth, will relieve the toothache. It can also be applied beneficially on the gums for strengthening them.

Clove: The use of a clove in toothache reduces pain. It also helps to decrease infection due to its antiseptic properties. Clove oil, applied to a cavity in a decayed tooth, also relieves toothache.

Pepper: A mixture of a pinch of pepper powder and a quarter teaspoon of common salt is an excellent dentrifice. Its daily use prevents dental caries, foul breath, bleeding from the gums, painful gums, and toothaches. It cures the increased sensitiveness of the teeth. A pinch of pepper powder mixed with clove oil can be put on the caries to alleviate the toothache.

I have 2 teeth scheduled to be pulled the 9th and in the mean time I take ground clove & olive oil and make a paste and stick into the 2 teeth that have lost their fillings. It tastes HORRIBLE but does help. You can also get you some maximum strength oragel, ice it or use a heating pad, but you may just have a sensitive tooth so try some sensitive toothpaste and see if that helps. But seeing a dentist is the best route. That way you will know exactly why is it hurting and catch it before it gets abscessed or infected, then it'll hurt worse!!
Good Luck!
Some dentist will work out a payment plan with you. It would probably help if you get a referral from a family member or friend.
Another option is to enroll in a dental plan that is similar to insurance and then you would not have to pay the complete cost of the visit. I use a dental plan that saves me up to 80% on my dental care, prescriptions, vision and chiropractic care also. With my plan I had no waiting period and no deductible, and I was able to go to the dentist the same day that I signed up for the plan.
You can find out more information about the plan that I use at http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/mlein...
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon :)

Financial Assistance and Other Resources for People With Cancer:Cancer imposes heavy economic burdens on both patients and their families. For many people, a portion of medical expenses is paid by their health insurance plan. For individuals who do not have health insurance or who need financial assistance to cover health care costs, resources are available, including Government-sponsored programs and services supported by nonprofit organizations. Cancer patients and their families should discuss any concerns they may have about health care costs with their physician, medical social worker, or the business office of their hospital or clinic.

In 1946, Congress passed a law that gave hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities grants and loans for construction and modernization. In return, they agreed to provide a reasonable volume of services to persons unable to pay and to make their services available to all persons residing in the facility鈥檚 area. The program stopped providing funds in 1997, but about 300 health care facilities nationwide are still obligated to provide free or reduced-cost care.
