Long Term Disability Insurance? |
I have recently been placed off of work for medical reasons and I flied through short term and now that I am on long term they are urging me to apply for SSI. I was told by my employer I am eligible for it till I am 67 but why are they so pushy, they have law offices calling me every day and I tell them no thanks, I don't need your assistance and they take that as I have applied and want to know my application date ect. Why are they so pushy and why is it any of their business, I think if it is a service my employer offered that shoudl be it. Maybe you should sit down with them or via phone, and ask them. Tell them you dont understand why they are so pushy and you toldl you were eligible till 67. nothing can hurt from asking them what gives.... I am also, recently, collecting L.T.D. from the company I worked for. The insurance company that I collect from has a firm they hired to help one apply for Social Security. This other company called me and I have received letters from the disability insurance company and this company. What happens is if Social Security approves you, you will collect whatever you can from them first and then the L.T.D. makes up the rest of what you are drawing. I guess they get Social Security involved so they are not paying the entire amount. The good thing I saw was, if you do draw Social Security, you will qualify for medicare after 24 months. That is a lot better than paying a big price for health insurance. Right? I can see where your concern is. Have you checked how long will the long-term disability benefits will last? Will you receive the benefits until you get better or until you reach age 65? The advantage of you being on SSI Disability is one, the company will no longer need to pay your claim. maybe pensions later but until you retire they wouldn't have to. There are two instances a person would be eligible for Medicare - when a person turns 65 or if they are on SSI Disability. That's another benefit to the company is that if you receive SSI benefits then you're also eligible for Medicare before age 65. Even on LTD, you're still receiving medical benefits from the company, right? Well, when you get on Medicare, then you can receive Medical benefits from Medicare and no longer from the company. I am wondering if you are planning to return to work for this employer? If you are, it sounds to me like they are not planning on having a position for you or they would be more than happy to continue to pay for your benifits until your return. It is a sad truth but we are just a number in their workforce. Easily replaced and these days quickly replaced. Except for the CEO no one is exempt and not even he is safe.. look at Scrushy in Alabama! But then he is a crook...lol ... but he got his pot of gold ahead of time. Only the guy that actually "owns" the business these days is safe from losing his position in the workforce regardless of how many years you have devoted to THE COMPANY. SEEN IT HAPPEN... and watching MY BACK |
