My insurance company overpaid me one weeks disability check. Do I have to return the money? |
I was off work for three weeks. The insurance company sent the check 2 days after I returned to work. They actually want me to send them more money back than they paid me. Why do I have to send the mony back? Why isn't this my money? usually there's a waiting period before disability kicks in. Usually it's 30 days. If it really is, you weren't out long enough to collect disability. But those are "if's". You'll need to call your agent or company, and ask them to get a REAL answer. Source(s): agent, 20+ years absolutely. But be sure they did. For example, it is possible you would get paid for any PART of a week. You are entitled to what the company policy has agreed to pay - no more, no less. You do need to send it back if they overpaid you but I would call and get them to agree to repayment only, not more than they sent, since it was their error. The government took to much taxes out on my paycheck. Do they have to give me a refund? You bet. That is the same reason you can not keep the check, it is simply not your money. Keeping it would be the same as stealing it. I went through the very same thing a couple of years ago. Yes, You'll have to return the money because it was issued after you returned to work. you can give it back now or pay it back later. |
