Can an insurance company deny short term disability, because one should recover from pneumonis in a week.?

I was off work for twenty-three days with pneumonia. I have a seven day waiting period before my short term disability pays. The insurance is not paying because they say i should have recovered during the 7 day waiting period. People die from pneumonia, how can they assume i should have recovered when my doctor signed the disability forms.

They have standards, I had pneumonia this year, but I was back to work, with lots of medication, after 13 days. I did go to the doctor three times. I did not consider filing for disability, just used sick leave.
