Must a small business owner who provides health insurance continue coverage if the employee goes on disability If an employee does not work the minium hours required to qualify for health insurance the employer may discontinue the health insurance. However if the employer qualifies for COBRA (federal with 20 or more EEs) or State COBRA he must offer that to the EE. Are you talking temporary disability, or Soc. Sec. disability? I request that as soon as you can, please contact the insurance company you are working with in your business, and if it's soc. sec. disability, also please check with Social Sec. Dept on this as well. Take care. Once they are no longer an employee, the employer doesn't ahve to cover them any more. generally,it is best to contact your specific insurance company,as not all policy coverage is equal. However if you value your employee, the goodwill of paying could be in your interest at least until the disability claim has been settled.
