I didnt qualify for any financial aid (oddly) are the loans and debt really worth it for the education? Study loans can take a long time to pay off, but people with degrees get higher pay and more satisfying jobs, so it is definitely worth taking your education further. If you're worried about the debt, you could do something like postponing studying for another year so you can apply for financial aid, or studying part-time so you can work at the same time. The debt is worth it as long as: a) you study something that you can get a job with afterwards. Humanities is fine, as long as you have some sort of plan for working afterwards (eg: journalism, teaching, law, etc.), and b) you only borrow as much as you really need. Live as cheaply as possible, with your parents if possible, and do things like taking textbooks out of the library rather than buying them all. They can be, as long as you get the best out of your education. You have to set yourself up for success after college which can include studying a subject for which there is demand, being involved in the school and in the community (this is becoming more and more important when companies are hiring from colleges. Also, may I suggest looking for scholarships. There are a number of scholarships out there whose awards are not based on financial need, but on academics, an essay, a project, etc. I would sign up on http://www.fastweb.com/ and also look at the websites for the colleges that you are interested in for scholarship information. I didn't qualify for any financial aid from the government, but have my entire tuition paid off with scholarships from my school. YOU have to spend money to make money. |
