Why do we need new federal taxes on gasoline?

The Democratic chairman of the House Transportation Committee,James L. Oberstar, proposed a 5-cent increase in the 18.4 cents-a-gallon federal gasoline tax to establish a new trust fund for repairing or replacing structurally deficient highway bridges.

Our president, Mr. Bush, has wisely rejected this tax, for now pending changes in the way highway funds are disbursed.

Stats from
http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/quickfacts/q...
In 2005, the US gas consumption was 384,700,000 gallons per day.
The Federal tax is $0.184/gal = $70,784,800.00/day in taxes which equals $25,854,148,200.00/year in taxes.
That's nearly 26 BILLION dollars in taxes.

We don't need it. I think it is irresponsible and absolutely deplorable for any politician to use tragedies like this for their political greed.
We don't. Taxed too much already.
taxing gasoline reduces consumption

the higher the price, less consumption

i dont know if it is needed or not, but there is a lot of excessive gas consumption
We don't need it.

It's a scam.

That's what all this "green' global warming hysteria is about.

It's all political to implement this tax on people under the guise that it is to research alternative energy sources and encourage people to seek out and use alternative energy sources.

But it is all political and all a lie.
I want to see gas prices go WAY DOWN.
That is the Democrats for you...by no means will they cut a needless welfare program to do this, but they want to tax the crap out of you for their own short comings, but of course they probably use government vehicle to get where they are going so the tax won't effect them...
Because we certainly can't think they would take money from other programs now can we? Don't you know they need that new gym so they be sure to stay healthy enough to ruin America just a little bit more. That is so much more important.
