Ron Paul's tax plan: NO Federal Taxes, VS. the 30% Federal sales Tax (FairTax) - which one is better? The Fair Tax obscures the real economic issues. A society's real wealth is determined by actually producing "stuff". And when there is enough "stuff", some people stay busy by providing services. Shifting the mechanism of paying taxes will not change the fact that a significant amount of activity is government directed - wasteful and often destructive. No "stuff" is being created. No wealth generation. Many of the services are really DIS-services. I think that Ron Paul is right. When considering our tax levels, we really need to think about the proper role of government. If we think that government should take care of us from the cradle to the grave; if it should police the world; then we need the IRS or some other organization to administer the same level of taxes. I do challenge the concept of a nanny state and so think that real tax reduction (even elimination) should be the goal. But to do so, we need to address the spending. Ron Paul's web site does not mention anything about eliminating all federal taxes. Edit: You're referencing Wikipedia? Fine! Follow the citation link on Wikipedia. The original web site does NOT say that Ron Paul wants to eliminate all federal income taxes. It does say that Ron Paul "adopted" the Republican Liberty Caucus Position Statement, which supports a "national debate" over "various alternative means of taxation." Find me a citation where Ron Paul explicitly says he wants to eliminate ALL federal taxes. Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/political_v... Wikipedia's citation link: http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/ron_paul... First of all, let's correct some statements in the original post. The Fairtax is not a graduated tax. The rate is 23% inclusive on all new goods and services. Second, the prebate is given to ALL registered households regardless of income. Third, the Fairtax replace ALL Federal taxes, not just income tax...payroll tax (SS and MediCare), estate tax, capital gains tax. You are confusing income tax with all federal taxes. I have only ever heard him say he will abolish income tax and the IRS, not ALL Federal taxes. Now, as a British subject, I am not fully understanding of how the American tax system works, but I know that the income tax is collected by the IRS and is ONLY used to pay interest owed to the Federal Reserve by the Federal Government. It doesn't pay for the military, or the police, or the FBI, or Education, or Healthcare or anything else. If Ron Paul scraps the Fed, then there will be no need to replace the income tax. This is NO CONTEST and no comparison--Ron Paul's idea is FAR BETTER, and it WILL come to pass! |
