Should I give up my $25/hr steady, boring job to venture into selling insurance and financial services? |
Five years ago I moved to a large, metropolitan area with an extremely high cost of living, but I also FINALLY got a job that allowed me to make a decent living and repay the huge student loans from earning my bachelor's in business administration. I'm not using my degree, but I'm making as much as I'd hoped as the reult of earning it(the pay rate is because of government contracting requirements for hiring those already trained and experienced--most of my co-workers are retirees)...the problem is, most of my coworkers are only high school educated, and the general environment is pretty hostile to whites and those of my upbringing. I long to use my degree, to work among those with whom I have more in common, and to possibly make much more money than if I stay in my present job--as well as actually DO something! In my current work, it's mainly just being there in case something happens! But I'm afraid of possible failure; the risk of commission sales, the stigma of salespeople... No don't do it. my sister sells ins and it's doesn't pay that well. stick with the $25 for now, I'm sure you'll find something better No, are you kidding? I need a job like that!!!! Keep your steady job. commission sucks keep the steady pay check I am 46, and learning new tricks isn't as hard as you might think. Here is what I did. Start a home based business that will create leverage for you as well as residual income. I am with one of the fastest growing businesses in the Inc500. Start to build this right away so that you have the freedom to choose the career you really want.....you may be surprised to find that this is indeed the career for you. Either way, it is still residual income so you would have the cushion you need while stepping out of your comfort zone to pursue a career where you can use your degree. Never fear failure, always have your goals in mind and work towards them, tackle commissioned sales head on and totally forget the stigma of salespeople. Not everyone sees them that way. |
