Should fat people pay more for health insurance?

They will have more health problems than people who are not fat.

Yes fat (obese not overweight) people should pay more....UNLESS they are on steroids prescribed by a doctor causing them to be fat. Then it would be uncontrollable for the person. And alot of people are overweight which is not a big deal. But if their BMI (body mass index) is over 30 then they are obese. This is when it becomes unhealthy! What I'm saying is that if you can control certain aspects of your health then you should pay less insurance than someone who neglects their health.
No, we are already paying too much into this system. How can you judge who is going to have more health problems a skinny person or fat? Some of the health problems people have are genetic and not related to weight at all. I know some very skinny people who are in and out of the doctor and the hospital. (It is very unfortunate)
No, they should not. I am not fat by any means but I think it is unfair to ask anyone to pay more because of a physical condition. With the exception of the following:

people who smoke
people who drink too much
people who do drugs

Yes some might say obesity is generated by people who just eat too much. Part of that is true but the other part of it is that no one is educated as to what healthy food is, how much to eat, when to eat it, how to eat it and where to get it. Look around, we are a country filled with fast food places. Most working people fall into the trap and I do not think they should be penalized by having to pay extra for health care.

Ideally, health care should be universal, I can't believe we are the only western country w/o it. Disgrace!
this is already the case. In fact, overweight people are often DENIED health insurance because they are overweight.

However, luckily if you get your insurance through your job, it is a "group coverage" and everybody has to pay the same and nobody can be denied (so far as I know - there may be other crappy loop holes the insurance companies use to make money).

Do you also think that ppl who are born with health issues, such as a hole in their heart, should have to pay more because they are more prone to illness? Or women should pay more because they are more likely to have babies?

I personally think everyone should pay the same. Insurance companies make TONS of money off of people who have insurance but barely use it... it more than covers the people who use it all the time.
Anyone who puts their life in jeopardy unnecessarily should pay more.

If you're overweight because of a glandular problem (very rare in actuality) then no, of course not. But if you just don't take care of yourself, then most certainly yes. If smokers and druggers and drinkers have to pay more because they can't or wont' change their lifestyle then it should be the same case with the obese if they can fix their problem but don't.

I'm sorry. but enough is enough. Lifestyles changes are not expensive. Hurt feelings aside, if they're allowed to continue a bad lifestyle without any kind of consequence, but other bad lifestyle livers have consequences, that's prejudiced. Period. People are just so sensitive about the weight issue that they're blindsided by the social implications. No one ever thinks about the FACTS. The facts are this. if you don't take care of yourself but you COULD if you had the willpower, then you're doing it to yourself. Why should the rest of us pay for that?
That is by far the most inaccurate statement I have seen on this website. If a person is "average weight", they could have as many or even more health problems than a person who is considered overweight. It all depends on what you put into your body and that will determine how healthy you are. A normal weight person can succumb to heart attacks, strokes, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, just as quickly as one who is overweight. It all depends of your genetic makeup, lifestyle (you can be skinny, but if youre a couch potato, you could easily suffer a heart attack or stroke faster than an active "overweight" person), etc.. The only people who should pay more for health insurance are those who are at risk for the diseases I mentioned above; and to determine that (im not sure if this is the procedure already), every health insurance applicant should be forced to see a doctor who will determine their cholesterol levels, take their blood pressure, blood sugar, and search their family history for diseases that may run in it., and if the tests come back abnormal, the health insurance company should have the right to decline or charge higher fees.
This could be an interesting debate as older people pay more for life insurance. I wouldn't be against price varying but there would have to be exception for people with thyroid disorders etc...
