Can a daughter cover her mother in her company's health insurance? |
A friend of mine is expecting her daughter to get a full-time job after graduation in summer of 2007. She is a 58-year old widow and doesn鈥檛 have health insurance. She is planning to have her daughter claim her as a dependent in the coming tax year in order to cover her in her daughter company鈥檚 health insurance once her daughter gets the job. I told her the above condition is impossible. Her daughter can claim her as a dependent, but not able to cover her in the group health insurance, such as company's health insurance. Would like to hear other comments and opinions. 鈾?鈾?up to the insurance company 鈾?鈾? I honestly doubt it- only a spouse and minor children can be covered (also children over 18 that are attending school full time. The best bet would be to ask H.R. dept, but I am 99% sure that the answer is no. Most likely, but usually costs extra. I would contact the companie's HR director and get the answer directly from them. Nearly all health plans can be extended to cover spouses, children, and extended family if need-be. www.unitedhealthcare.com It actually depends on the company's benefits. Generally she can claim her as a dependent if she is living with her & caring for her; some companies will allow you to claim certain things for this type of dependent. She should talk to her HR person about the benefit package when she gets the job. I tried my best to look through my company's insurance policies - the only thing I could find was adding a spouse and children.. not even a field for "other". It depends on the company's health plan, usually they only let you claim spouse and kids. But she can talk to the company's HR to find out for sure. |
