What are the Pro's and Con's of Short-term Health Insurance? PROS: Are quick and simple to get. It's a bare-bones policy that covers no pre-existing health conditions, so there's no costly underwriting process involved. Also, it's for a limited period of time. After successfully answering three or four questions, you're in. Are cheaper than regular health insurance. That's because you're only going to have it for a short time and it doesn't cover any CONS: Got a pre-existing condition? Forget getting it covered. Diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, any chronic disease, even pregnancy, wouldn't be covered if you had it before you bought the policy. Forget getting preventive-care benefits too. Short-term plans aren't meant to provide comprehensive coverage. You're on your own, and out-of-pocket, for routine physicals, immunizations, dental and vision care, mammograms, pap smears and prostate tests. You may be left out in the cold if you need longer benefits. If you develop a chronic condition during your short-term policy, you wouldn't be eligible for coverage of that condition if you bought another short-term policy. That would be considered a pre-existing condition. Some carriers, though, including Golden Rule, permit an extension of benefits under certain circumstances. You may forfeit your right to join a HIPAA plan. The federal government protects consumers who would have a tough time getting insurance once they leave a group plan because they have a pre-existing medical condition.
