Once diagnosed with cancer, how difficult is it to change employers & obtain new health insurance? |
Also, once diagnosed can you increase your life insurance coverage? As a clarification to "Deep's" answer, your previous health insurance must have been group-based and not have been lapsed for more than 63 (not 60) days. There is no requirement that your previous group health insurance have lasted 2 years; typically, in a group health insurance situation, the pre-existing exclusionary period isn't more than 6 or 12 months (depending on the circumstances), so that's all the previous "creditable coverage" you need to cancel it out. Employers have no right to know your health history prior to, or after, your hire. Also, group life insurance typically will provide a dollar amount of insurance an employee qualifies for without having to provide "evidence of insurability." Above this amount, you will have to provide details regarding your health history. Most insurers to not set a "5-year limit" on cancer patients before they qualify for insurance. Because all types of cancers are different, and because cancers have different stages of progression within an individual, it's not accurate to state there's one time limitation that applies to all patients. A person who had stage 1 basal cell carcinoma, fully excised and fully healed, will become insurable much sooner than 5 years. However, a person who had oat cell carcinoma of the lung, stage 2, may never be insurable. To get correct facts regarding HIPAA, I suggest you read this booklet published by the Dept. of Health and Human Services for more information: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/healthinsreformfo... I hope this helps. Source(s): Former life insurance underwriter; 16 + years insurance industry experience; 9 + years insurance law experience. HIPPA law says you can change employers and be covered under a new group plan without evidence of insurability as long as you were covered under the old group at least two years and do not go without coverage for more than 60 days. Getting an employer to hire you might be a different story. As for life insurance, if you have been cancer free for 5 years (depending on the type cancer) you may be able to get more. You could get more group life during an open enrollment period. That might be you best bet. I don't think you will hired by a company because most require a physical and Insurance you can't get. You better stay with what you got or go on Disability. It isn't right to be treated that way but you ask. MY BEST TO YOU Real facts. Please don't change if only you must and no way out.Changes of work place may not be good to your health as you need to face a lot of changes .......people ,working place......Insurance company will only insured you on not related diseases ( this is to said nothing to do with cancer ).They might even apply loading to you stanard coverage. If you think of not declaring...try hard ....You might not be able to have your claim in full.As what i know the forms you sign stated :( you should known or might know that you are healthy or similar statement.) So i advice anyone to plan and buy insurance before you can't.Life ,Medical and Investment Ex-Insurance Agent |
