As a retiree, I would expect you to be of a 'certain age' and require good health care. You need to consider the amount of money you can afford to pay for the cost of your health care (not the insurance). There are high deductible plans. You might be better off paying less for a high deductible plan and negotiating a lower cost for normal doctors visits. However, most retirees have higher medical bills and need insurance even for normal visits.

Look at the deductible, out of pocket maximums, prescription riders, if there is a 'network' that offers discounts, are your doctors on the network, does it require a gatekeeper (approval to see specialists), does it cover prescriptions and are their limiations as to what can be covered (ie only generics).

Once you've gotten all that, ask your friends who they have and are they happy. AARP has a plan that's available in many areas as well as Golden Rule. Try them both.
The key point is, Are you 65 yet? If so apply for Medicare and look for a good Medicare Supplement plan. Call the numbers below for help. If you are less than 65 then you still probably need to get an individual/family plan for the years left until you are age 65 This can be tough for someone in their 60's for two reasons. #1) it can be expensive so get a high deductible #2) it will be medically underwritten so medical issues can get you markups, riders and even declined.
BlueCross Medicare 800-809-8568
Humana Medicare 800-833-6578
United-AARP Medicare 866-255-4835
if you are too young for medicare, you can still qualify if you are disabled. call medicare, they might have an alternative for you.
Also, join a group, to be able to avail of their group rates. talk to an agent/broker about joining a group, i think that you do not need to go under a heavy health scrutiny if you join thru a group.
I can send you information with no obligation. Let me know.
