Is there any way to count my live-in girlfriend as a dependant for Taxes/Health Insurance??

I'd like to count my girlfriend as a dependant so we can get her health insurance. We live together, and I'm the only one with a salary. Can she legally be considered my dependant?

I dont know where you live, but in my state no, shes considered a room mate until you have a marriage license, since she's (im assuming here) not a minor and shes not related to you you can't claim her. I have a friend in a similar situation, she is gay and has been with her partner for 12 years, but because gay marriage isn't legal they are considered room mates and are not entitled to any benefits of marriage or having a dependent. The exception might be if you have a child with her, but you would need to consult a tax advisor or insuance agent about that.
NO. You have to marry her to claim her as a dependent.

SORRY, this is why marriage is important as it affords rights to partners in cases like this, and other things.
You have to be married.

You can claim head of household as well.
No so to claim her you will need to marry her.
For tax purposes, you can probably call her your wife since in most states what you are doing is considered common law marriage.

As far as benefits go, if you live in a common law marriage state, then she is your wife for benefits purposes as well. If not, check with your employer to see if they offer cohabitation benefits.

...for those who don't understand why gays want marriage legal for them, do you get it now?
Bottom line.... no. I could get into details but it just won't happen. The only alternative for tax/legal/insurance issues is to get married. And forget the whole common law marriage thing. Even in states where this is legal it takes paperwork and is still not applicable for insurance reasons. There is no shortcut and this is why under the laws of the land commitment and marriage is important. Can't commit? Well no benefits. If you are gay and work for a major corporation in some cases you can do this.
For tax purposes you can claim anyone you support as a dependent if their income does not exceed certain limits, and they do not provide over half of their living expenses.

Being a dependent does not automatically allow you to add her to your health insurance. You need to check with your insurance company, and check your state law.

Maybe you could adopt her!
