Puppy health / guidance / insurance? |
Am adopting a 6 mo. old ridgeback/rottie mix from HSUS, poorly socialized, nips out of fear, need to socialize with 8 yr. old cat (non-dog lover -abandonment fear issues by others) coming now to wide-open spaces and loving environ. Any ideas on behavioral techniques (for both), food feeding, puppy health insurance policies? Thanks. You might want to get some one on one training for you puppy with a dog trainer. Some major Pet stores have trainers for less than private trainers normally cost. Then take your dog to group obedience classes to train and to socialize. For food, I'd suggest a good food like Royal Canin for large breed puppies. It's a great food without fillers and with quality ingredients. It does not have toxic preservatives. Another good brand that is also more readily available is a newer brand of Eukanuba Lamb and Rice for large breed puppies. I wouldn't normally buy their food but this is a good one. Flint River Ranch has special order holistic dog food. For puppy health insurance, see if any Vets in your area offer it. My Vet has an available plan through his practice. Some big stores that have Vet hospitals in them also carry them. Individual plans vary. One thing we add to our dog's food (ours eat Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice) is "Lamb Roll" or "Lamb Log" put out by Pet Botanics and available in PetSmart stores. We slice it and cube it and feed it for treats or add some to their food. They love it and it is very healthy for them. For skin and coat we get vitamin supplements from the Vet and sometimes feed our dogs raw eggs. (every few days, one egg each). Start by feeding whatever the dog has been eating and gradually shift to the new food, increasing amounts of new every few days until older food is eliminated. Sudden change of diet can result in diarrhea or GI upset. Thanks for some great tips. |
