What do you do if you need mental health help, but have no money and no insurance? You could look into your local MHMR (Mental Health Mental Retardation). They are typically state funded agencies that are there to assist people of all ages who lack the insurance or funding to get and maintain mental health treatment and mental health medications. Because of this they are heavily utilized and there is sometimes a lengthy wait. Some also have the ability to go check on patients at their residence. If this becomes a crisis situation then a person can walk into these agencies in crisis during regular business hours. If this occurs after hours then this person needs to be immediately taken to an Emergency Room where they can be assessed to see if this person needs Acute Inpatient Stabilization due to being Suicidal, Homicidal or actively psychotic. If this is the case then they will typically be hospitalized no matter what their insurance or ability to pay. Hope to hear this helps in some way. Go to the clinic, they should have a sliding pay scale, that is based on income, or the lack thereof. Also, check with social agencies, in the city where you live. It really depends on where you live, but a good starting point is to contact the closest chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). They're usually aware of what services are available for low/no cost in your area. Good luck. If you live in Ontario, Canada you could go to your regional mental health unit to be assessed. If they think you need treatment they will either admit you or treat you on an out patient basis. The hospital will supply your meds until you get the government assistance you need to pay for them. I mean, none of this really matters if you live in Alabama, does it? |
