Health Care Insurances Won't Pay For Ambulance?

There is a special insurance just for ambulance. They told that health care insurances don't pay everything when you need an ambulance. If you have a skiing accident and a helicopter is necessary to bring you to the hospital, it will cost at least $ 12.000. And if my grandpa has heart attack symptoms and I call 911 the insurance won't pay if he had not a real heart attack. It's impossible to know if you have a real heart attack when you have life threatening symptoms. Is it true that Blue Cross and other health care insurances won't pay for the ambulance if you had a fake heart attack?

We have UHC through my work. My husband has needed to be transported via ambulance 2 or 3 times. The insurance company has paid all but the deductible for the ride, which is seperate from the deductible for the hospital care.

I'd assume all other insurances would be the same except, possibly, Medicare or Medicaid.

If the ambulance came and there was no transport (not taken to the hospital) the claim is automatically denied. Medicare does not pay for an ambulance just coming to your house and treating you on the scene, or because you had a false alarm. A lot of people don't know this. I had to make my grandparents aware when I started processing the claims and found out what things get paid and what gets denied. When you are transported by the helicopter it is called (air ambulance). Those claims are usually paid also. Nurses handle those claims because of the amount of the bill, ($12,000 +)and there are many more charges and details for those. Maybe you should change companies. Find one with the benefits and coverages you need.
