Should employers charge overweight employees more for health insurance? |
Often times eating too much is a choice and not a health problem. They often charge tobacco users more. What's the difference? I see your point , now many employers probably already weed out such people during pre -employment physicals instead of the method you mention but I can see that happening on the horizon at some point . At that time they will probably have to remove all vending machines or replace the food with healthy nutritious food in order to not be held accountable themselves. I once worked for a large printing company that instituted random drug testing , the company began losing so many longtime skilled employee's they almost went out of business and had to stop the practice all together for that reason . However those that did get fired were recalled and not one could be proven to have been under the influence on the job and the drug found in each case was marijuana and not the harder stuff . In final answer to your question I don't think they should for either but offer much help instead , in the end I think the insurance companies may win out and dictate company policy across the board on both matters smoking and overeating . Maybe..I know my parents started getting charged this year for being smokers. Same idea right?? No, but they do....which is stupid.....everythings a health risk....being too stupid is a health risk but, they dont charge them more.... There really isn't any if the weight is put on my choice and not by something metabolic. If the physician of the person says its a metabolic thing then the insurance should be normal fees but if its apparent that its just an overweight thing - it might give the person initiative to lose weight if their premiums would go down. I don't think so, I think insurance company's get overweight people without charging more......overweight people have more health issues, which is more co-payments and more money. I think its very offensive to think that you would say smoking and being overweight are the same.......there are proven facts that sometimes its a genetic problem....or a predisposition........smoking is just a bad habit. Nobody's perfect. Should joggers be charged more because they have a higher chance of getting hit by a car? I think you are right. And, I think the people who use their Health benifits the most should pay more. Let the people who get sick the most, pay the most. |
