How can I get health insurance that includes maternity? (not through an employer)?

I own my own business and need health insurance that includes maternity benefits. Surprisingly (to me) this is nearly impossible. Any ideas?

Great that you are working for yourself and the owner of your future. As you know it is hard to find maternity converge that is worth the extra cost. I have been in the insurance business for over ten years and have just learned about most hospitals "Cash discount programs".

Let me explain how this works, you tell the hospital that you would like there cash discount price for you and your babies stay before you go to the hospital. I have had a number of clients this has worked for and the savings is huge. I have four kids so know a little about how this works. With are last baby boy the cash price was $3,500 total for mom and baby boy. If we had waited for the hospital to send the bill it would have been over $15,000, what a difference a day makes. Also, if you have any complications like the need for a C section most regular health policies cover for the complications.

Getting health insurance with Maternity coverage is not easy and can be very costly as you have found out. If you still want it after learning about the cash discount program look at getting a small group policy you and your husband make a small group, all you need is 2 employees. Good luck.
get married to someone in the military, I knew people who did it that way sort of a contract marriage, you get benefits they see a rise in the amount of money they make.
Are you already pregnant?

Most insurance wont take you if you are already pregnant and most have 10-12 mth waiting period. So yes, it is impossible. Your best bet is to try for Medicaid.....or just have the baby and pay for the hospitalization yourself...just remember to try to have it natural to save money
this happened to me. I couldnt get Medicaid since i made too much money.....i had to pay for hospitalization myself, but hospital gave me a discount since my account was self pay and not insurance

Once you're pregant, you *might* qualify for your state Children's Health Insurance Program, which includes prenatal coverage for the mother CARRYING the child.

Aside from that . .. my midwife charges $3200, with a $500 discount if you pay by the 7th month, for total prenatal care and homebirth delivery. And if you look at the statistics, midwives and homebirths are healthier for babies and mothers.

Beware of "health discount plans" like the one in the answer above. MOST providers don't take them. It's the "latest scam" in the insurane world.

You *might* want to consider www.medi-share.org, if you qualify. It's NOT health insurance, so that's a warning. But it might do the trick for you.
