I need affordable health insurance and can't find any anywhere.?

The only good way to find a health insurance plan is to visit a local independent agent. This person knows the market in your area and can find the best plan for your situation. They don't charge you anything for the service and they're there to answer any questions after the sale.

You'll find if you try to do this yourself on the internet you will get confused by the 1000+ plans available. How do you know which plan is best? How do you know which plan would cover a pre-existing condition and which plan will decline you? The local agent will know the answer.

Stay away from the medical discount plans. The people that sell these plans have little or no knowledge of health insurance and do not need to be licensed. The plans are not regulated by the state (however, some states are starting to ban them from selling the plans). No regulation means you have little recourse when problems arise.

If you are tempted by these discount plans with the low premium make sure to get a list of local doctors before signing up. Call the doctors and ask if they still take the plans (many will not have heard of the plan or don't know they're listed) and if they're taking new patients. Here are some links to information about these plans:

Try United and Anthem, check under their individual policies. It's not cheap, but it's reasonable
Health insurance is the most outrageous thing in the world. I have insurance through my company and still can't go to the doctor because the out of pocket cost is so high. I wish I could help you.
My husband and I were in a situation where we needed health insurance and neither of our employers were offering at the time...kudos to you for wanting to be insured, btw...We ended up using an insurance broker. For a fee (usually less than $100), an insurance broker will take your info and research a plethora of companies for the best deal possible. That they're not working for a specific company is also a plus...no bias. They'll come back with several package / pricing options.

Also, I've never used it personally, but I've heard good things about ehealthinsurance.com.

With so many options and a limited knowledge base, we were so happy to have heard about these services...hope it works for you!

The best way to find health insurance is through a local health insurance agent on your state or city. I would stay away from the online quote houses because you can never be quite sure about what/who you are doing business with.

Here are a few question to ask you potential agent
1. where are you located
2. do you specialize in health insurance. (see blog)
3. do you offer coverage through several companies, name them ( they should include names like Blue Cross, Aetna, Humana, several of the major companies)

Determine your coverage requirements
1. Hospital Deductible - This is the amount that you will need to pay in the event someone needs to be hospitalized. These range from $500-$5000

2.Dr. Office Co-Pay - This is the amount that you will need to pay the Dr. Office each time that you visit them. These range from $0-$50

3.Hospital Co-Insurance (usually listed as 80/20 or 70/30) - This is the amount of money that you and the insurance company pay base upon %. For example - if the policy says 80/20 then after you pay the initial deductible then you would pay 20% of the covered expenses and the insurance company would pay 80% of the covered expenses up to the Stop Loss. (usually $5,000 or $10,000)

4.OOP - Out of Pocket expenses - this means the total amount of covered expenses that you would be responsible to pay. This does not include non covered expenses..

5.Conditions that might be excluded - All insurance companies consider risk when evaluating any conditions that you might have or prescriptions that you are currently taking. One company may exclude or decline coverage while another company might cover the condition. This is why I work with several companies.

I hope this helps.
