How long do i have to have group insurance before i can collect COBRA health coverage after leaving my job? |
Once I leave my current job, I am interested in getting COBRA coverage. Is there a certain time I have to have the companies group health coverage in force before I pay for the COBRA coverage? You have to have health coverage in place the day before the "qualifying event" - which means your resignation or getting fired. The employer ALSO has to have at least 20 employees, in order to be required to offer you coverage. Source(s): agent, 21+ years Employers of 20 or more employees must offer to continue health coverage to qualified plan participants who were covered on any given workday in the preceding six months. www.higginscompanies.com It is covered in your employee handout, and the Human Resources or Department Manager should be able to answer this for you. me so, within 14 days of you term day you should recieve your choice of electing cobra, one you elect cobra, you have 45 days to make your firt payment of 102% of the preium. 100% of what the employer would have paid plus 2% of administation fees. Once you are inrolled, your benefits do not change from what you had before. The same coverage you had prior, you will have with cobra.. The length that you are on cobra varies between 12 and 18 months. However once you get another job and that coverage kicks in, then the cobra is terminated. Most of the time the ex-employer will enroll you and all payents are made to the ex-employer. I work for a medical insurance company. |
