In Texas, options for elderly needing assisted healthcare, but has no good insurance or close family to help?

This 86 year old woman that I know is in a bad situation. Almost 2 weeks ago she suffered a hip fracture. She lay on the floor in her home for almost 2 days before her 75 yr. old step-brother found her. On June 26 she underwent surgery and was sent to an assisted living facility on June 27 for physical therapy. Her mind is sharp, but her body is still frail, she can't hear and gets dizzy spells from an already existing vertigo condition. Two days ago she was told that she would be discharged on July 8. She's been widowed for over 15 yrs., never had children, and her brother is no help as he actually acts like a teenager stuck in an old man's body. The reason for discharge is not clear, but it has to do with the insurance, Secure Horizons. My co-workers and I have been unable to provide much help as we work and have to take care of our own families. Right now is the 1st chance I have to ask for advice. What kind of options are there for elderly with no family and no insurance?

Nursing homes will take her. They take all your property and use the social security for payment. Might not be the best choice, but unless someone wants to take her themselves, it might be the only choice.
Contact the state Human Services Department. Call the hospital itself and see where they can refer you for assistance. I know in Jersey a lot of the hospitals offer charity care. Ask about that too.
contact the government assistance plan.. you are a tax payer.. they will help you.. If you are poor or rich you have it made!!
Here's how you can help.
Write questions like this to sensitize others to the problem.
Support universal single payer health care like every industrialized nation provides except USA and South Africa.
Don't vote for political parties that value gross materialism and corporate capitalism over improved quality of life for all citizens.
Take up a collection.
