Where can I get homeowners insurance? |
My homeowners policy was dropped because I have three Rottweilers. Do you know of anybody who will issue homeowners to me? this info should help!! Unfortunately, it is not uncommon today for insurance companies to charge a higher premium to homeowners based upon the breed of dog that they have. And though it is hard to believe, many insurance companies are requiring that people give up their dog, who is often considered a member of the family, or they will risk being dropped by their carrier. The insurance companies are doing this, even if the dog has no history of biting or attacking anyone. The AKC has even gotten involved in requesting that insurance companies not create a list of dog breeds that homeowners cannot have, but instead evaluate the dog itself. They believe that a dog, if it is well-trained and well cared for, can be an asset to a homeowner. Dogs often provide protection or work as an early alarm system in the case of fire, and they are a deterrent to most thieves. Unfortunately, many people have classified certain breeds of dogs like American Staffordshire Terriers (a.k.a. Pit Bulls), Rottweilers, and other dogs as dangerous due to some irresponsible dog owners who have mistreated or under trained their dogs. It is true that these dogs are large, and when focused they can inflict much damage to another person, but the fault is usually with the owner and could be assessed quickly when determining if they company would cover the homeowner. In most cases the dogs are gentle members of the family, and it is unfortunate that they are punished for other people's behavior. So what is a dog owner to do? The first thing you can do to keep yourself insured is to ask around. Find friends and family who own dogs and ask them what provider they use. If you do not have a friend who has a dog, you can call your state insurance department to find recommendations. If you do call the state insurance department, share you concerns, as it could help to influence legislation in your state. For instance, in Pennsylvania and Michigan, it is illegal to deny insurance to anyone based upon the breed that they own. Also, contact different brokers, even if they are within the same insurance company. They may have different policies. You can also contact you local legislator in order to, again, influence legislation. Another great idea is to get your dog into some type of obedience training. Sometimes and insurance company will lower your premium based upon your dog having been formally trained. It will also offer you peace of mind knowing that your dog will most likely not behave like those we often hear of on the news. Finally, a good option is to purchase a separate liability rider for your existing homeowners insurance policy which is exclusively directed toward your dog. It may cost a little more, but it could prevent you from having to give up your precious family pet. Owning a dog is a significant responsibility, and it goes beyond daily care of your family pet. If you are a homeowner looking to get a dog, you should check with your homeowners insurance first to make sure it will not have an effect on your coverage. It may save you the heartbreak later of having to give up your dog. If you have your heart set on a breed that your insurance policy does not cover, then begin looking into other companies that may cover your home, no matter what breed of dog you own, before you get your dog. The responsibility of homeowners that have dogs does not end with just obtaining insurance coverage, it also involves appropriate fencing and training. If you notice your dog is a little aggressive, then take action to modify the behavior or limit the dog's contact with those it is aggressive toward. If dog owners work together to make sure they limit the number of perceived issues, then insurance companies may discontinue limiting homeowners insurance to dog owners. Still have more questions? Use our free service or e-mail doglaw@akc.org, where they are working to change legislation to not allow insurance companies to discriminate against dog owners. That is just plain dumb. Because you have three rottwielers? I have never heard of that! I have homeowners/ renters insurance through Gieco. They also insure other stuff besides cars, and have great rates. Try them! |
