There are direct writers that write homeowners coverage in some states, like Amica or Hartford. Technically, even when you're talking directly to the company, you are talking to an agent, because all states require people who sell insurance to have an agent's license. Why do you want to go direct? There isn't usually a cost savings (ie, you don't get a 20% discount for not using "an agent"), and if there's a problem, you don't have anyone else to go to. Also, to get quotes from 5 different companies, you'd have to make five calls, and explain everything 5 times. If you go to an independent agent, you can get a lot more quotes, with a lot less hassle - and some feedback about how each company works their claims process. That stupid lizard on tv says you can buy auto insurance direct with them and save a ton of money, but I used a real company with an agent instead and they are cheaper and have better service.
