Why do people not bother to take out house insurance?

Near where I live, there have been loads of floods, as shown on the news. Today, I saw a couple pleading poverty because their house is totally flooded. However, in the next breath they say they have no house insurance, I assume they mean contents insurance. I can't believe that people say a few pounds a month by not being insured but know what the consequences could be. Am I the only person who feels no pity for these people?

that is the one thing that we make sure that we have, cos you never know what could happen. The last thing that i would want is to make my kids homeless because we can't afford to get our house repaired if and damaged ever occured. People always think it will never happen to them. But by the looks of things it does. Maybe they will learn and get insurance next time.

prehaps they are on benefits and that 拢10 goes towards food etc. its just the same with tv licence, ppl just cant afford it- it seems a little but added up its like 拢120 a year and more in the first year so tv and insurence together is like 拢300 cos you have to pay 6m in advance for tv
When considering insurance, people weigh up the likelihood of their posessions getting damaged/stolen, and they obviously think that the amount of money they give to an insurance company would be put to better use.

Of course, there is also the possibility that they can't afford insurance, and they have to pay for more essestial items, such as food and clothing.
Like most tragedies in life, people think, 'It can't/won't happen to me.'
It is simple!! Its all to do with people's tendencies to think "it will not happen to me". And thus don't bother.
