If I were to ship goods out of the UK for repair, will I then be charged import tax when the goods are shipped back?
If you're shipping within the European Union then the answer should be no. Import duties and taxes between EU member states have long been abolished.
If you're shipping outside of the EU to the US, Canada, Australia, etc., then yes, quite probably you will be made to pay the appropriate customs duty when it arrives back in the UK, which is dependant on what the sender claims on the declaration form. If they are a bit economical with the truth and give it a slightly lower valuation than it's true worth (or even give a figure under the import duty threshold - currently 拢18), then you won't have to pay as much or at all. It all depends what you can get away with. Not that I'd advise trying to fiddle HM customs and excise, and not that I have ever done it personally you understand! :-) |
