What are the taxes and duties involved in importing from China to Australia? |
I am wanting to start a home business and hope to be able to source products from China. I need to understand my obligations and the costs involved and thought that this could be a good starting point. A simple question with a complex answer: - GST for most products - tariff (which might be 0%) for most products and - surcharges for a few products. You need to find the Harmonized Tariff Schedule number of the product(s), then find out the tariff for each product. You need to understand how what taxes/duties are applied in which order and which apply to just product cost (e.g. FOB) versus product plus cartage (e.g. CIF). Check customs.gov.au for details. You need to know your China source very well; frauds are aplenty. Items seen in-person may not be items received. You'll need to register your business to apply for an import licence for Australia. Depending on items imported, taxes may vary. Check it out in the Australia's import/export website. I read an article about tax on importation, theres deliver,shipment taxes i think. |
