Can i get my money back from MI state income tax filling mistake.?

I work and live in TN but I am under an agency that is base in MI and for the last 2 years I filed state income tax in MI. A friend told me that i am not supposed to file a MI income tax cos I live in TN and that income tax should be file on where you live and work. my question is can i still get my money from MI?

You typically have 3 years to file a return, or file an amended return and that works for both federal and state. You should go on-line to the Michigan Department of Revenue website and look for forms and instructions for filing an amended state return. The only reason that you should have needed to file a Michigan tax return for the last 2 years is if the agency that you worked for withheld Michigan taxes from your paychecks. But even if they did, as long as you live and work in TN you would not have to pay Michigan taxes. Taxes are based where you work, not where your employer is based.
Hopefully though you filed a Tennesee state income tax, otherwise you need to file a Tennesee state return.File an ammended return in MI and TENN and you will get your money back from MI
The best thing for you to do is to seek the advice of an CPA.
