Whats the earliest i can file my income taxes? |
Whats the earliest i can file my income taxes? You can mail your return early, the IRS is not going to send it back to you. They are open for business 12 months a year. In fact, some individuals, and businesses file their returns using a fiscal year rather than the normal January to December calendar year most other people use. The IRS may place a hold on your file, because the amounts, and figures you report may need to be checked against figures employers, and banks, and other financial institutions report to the IRS about you. That information doesn't have to be reported until the end of January 2007. Also the IRS works in unison with the Social Security office, and other agencies, so there may be other holdups on finishing the review of your return. E-filing, (electronic filing) begins about the middle of January. You must sign your return before sending it. Your signature affirms that: 1. You are reporting the correct income and expense figures for all of 2006, and also that 2. Your return is complete, and all the information is true and accurate. 3. There is also a place to attach your W-2 forms (if applicable). For these reasons, most people must wait until the year is over, and they have all their documents, before filing. If you already have all your 2006 end-of-the-year financial information and are confident there will be no changes or additions coming in the month of December, you can file early. Later, if something does change, you will need to file an amended return to make corrections. Btw, You should use 2006 IRS Tax Forms, some of which I don't think are out yet. So if you need those forms, you have to wait until they are available. http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/lists/0,,id... New in 2006, you can file for a refund of telephone long distance excise tax. If you owned a phone and paid for long distance service the last few years, be sure to claim this refund. Source(s): http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,i... I THINK it is the First of the year, but am Not 100% sure. January 1. You have to wait until your employer(s) gives you your wage statements. And they don't have to give to you until January 31st! They usually wait until the last minute . . . www.irs.gov As soon as you get your W2's and/or I99's. Employers have until the last day of January to mail them out (by law). as soon as you receive your 2006 W-2's. Most employers don't get around to that till at late january |
