If you are married and have been married for less than a year how should you file your income taxes? Irrespective of date of the marriage, you can file jointly. However, do them separately and then do them together and see which makes better economic sense. Talk to your tax guy My best advise is to take it to a place like H & R Block, they will file it all for you and answer any questions you have. Personal Experience If you were married anytime in 2006, you will need to file "married", but you can opt to file jointly or seperately. You can play with the numbers a bit to get the most from your return. I file seperately to get more money back, but that may not be the best option for you. Good luck! It's the same as if you had a baby at 11:59 pm on 12/31/06, you can claim the child for 2006. If you got married in 2006, you can file married. I'd recommend talking to an expert to see if it would be more beneficial to file "married filing jointly" or "married filing separately" Find a local tax preparer. Do NOT use H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt or anything like that. Chances are, a smaller firm or individual CPA will charge less (mine charges $75 flat fee for long form, $60 for short form, instead of a percentage of your return) and you'll probably get more money back. Call your country's tax dept and ask. Don't ever ask just anyone for information about taxes and associated issues. You need to get the correct answer, and you cn only ensure that by asking the correct dept or (for taxes) a lawyer or accountant who specializes in tax problems. |
