Why does my income get taxed less if I file Married on my W-4?

Why do they tax my income less if I file as Married on my W-4 when married people actually pay more taxes? That seems like a surefire way to make sure that married people owe money at the end of the year.

Income tax for a married person over a single person depends on how much your spouse makes. If you are the only worker in a marrage, you will get to make 2 standard deductions and thus pay less in taxes. If you and your wife make the exact same income and file a joint income tax you would pay the same income tax as a single person who makes the same as you do. If your spouse make more money than you do, you will pay more income tax than a single person who makes the same as you do.
