Aside from taxing the rich people, how can we solve income and wealth inequality in the US? |
taking into account the fact that we are living in a capitalistic society It's called CHARITY i think...or Philanthropy if you prefer. Beyond some physical redistribution of wealth, you're not going to be able to in a capitalistic society, as the motivations and goals of individuals re: how much wealth they want or need will be different. Taxing the rich will just make everyone poor (except for the government, which will now have more money to squander than they already do). Education, education, education. And a national health system wouldn't hurt either Not a whole lot. The reason trickle down economics doesn't work for the extremely wealthy is due to the fact that they have no spending constraints before we lower their taxes, so by lowering their taxes, we don't generate any more spending, it just goes to their investments. Given this problem, we can either lower everyone else's taxes, who will then have more of their money to invest and grow their savings, but this will bankrupt the govt. So, raising the taxes and relieving the tax burden on the lower and middle class is one of the only ways to pull the extremes closer together. As the soviet union, china, cuba, zimbabwe and cambodia have shown us, redistribution of wealth only makes everyone equally poor. The joy of a capitalistic society is that if you are motivated, you can excell. The problem that you should be trying to solve is not how to take wealth away, but how to make the poor people motivated to excell. Dude you can lead a horse to water and that's it. Why should you even be thinking of stealing money from the rich to give to the poor. Will that solve the poor person's problem? I think not, that will just make the poor person scream louder for more free handouts. This is America with a capitalist society that allows everyone to advance if they choose to do so. Unfortunately the 60's & 70's democratic gov'ts set up this welfare system that is being abused and created dependants. It just astounds me that immigrants (illegal & legal) come here and figure out the system and the way to make money faster than the people on welfare. This point proves that if you have nothing and no guarantee that money will be given to you - you will find a way to support yourself (and alot of immigrants don't even have the level of education that our free public system provides). The answer to your question is to cut off all free hand outs or severly reduce them. Separate but equally failed since 1954. It only removed some segregation from the public school system, but government failed to enfore the equal part of that ruling. By raising the quality of education in our public school and making them truly equal; the socio-economic inequality gap would begin to disappear over time. |
