Short form return. if my taxable income is 48,000 how much should I be paying in taxes.?

You leave out some very important information, like your marital status and if you have any dependents, among other items.

If you are single, no dependents, and no adjustments like student loan interest, if your total income is $48,000 your taxable income would be $39,550 and your federal tax bill would be $6451.

If you really mean that your taxable income is $48K (after your standard deduction and exemption have been subtracted) the if you're single, tax would be $8564.
