Do I have to file taxes if I am a grad student and my only source of income are student loans?

If your a grad student, don't you do something for which you are paid....aren't you a teaching assistant or a research assistant? Don't you get some stipend for that work?
No, loans aren't income.
Loans are not taxable income.
I would suggest that you file any way. You need to document and memorialize the fact that in 2006 you did not earn income.
