Is there a penalty to retire at 55 other than paying income taxes?

No
We retired at 50 and have encountered no penalties to date, we can't cash in the 401 K's yet with out huge penalties but other than that the down side here is just not the same income but we have tightened our belts a bit and are loving it.........GO FOR IT........Life is short......!!!! Good luck to you! (join AARP too, and don't forget to mention your age when you go to motels and stuff.......they often will five you a discount.....you can even get a discount at Dunkin Doughnuts!!!!)
