Does anyone else work in an industry that you are offered job insurance, other than railroad? For those readers who may not know, "job insurance" could be had, in varying amounts, payable to an employee who's employment with the railroad was interrupted by disciplinary measures. There was a monthly premium to be paid, and the amount of that premium was dependent on the amount of coverage contracted for. I am not aware of any other industry where this coverage is in place. The rails have used BRCF "Brotherhood's Relief and Compensation Fund," and for a while, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers had job insurance available. Also for a while, before selling them out, the UTU had the fireman's contract and they had JI available for its members. I don't know if the BLET offers any or not. The main difference between them, was that claims filed under BRCF and UTU protection were reviewed by committee to determine if benefits were payable. The BLE JI was underwritten by an insurance company and, as long as you weren't disciplined for offenses not covered, such as Rule G, excessive speed, insubordination, etc., the benefits disbursements were not subject to review. The best part with this coverage was that premiums actually built up cash value and, if you never had to use it prior to retirement, the premiums were returned in the form of monthly stipend at retirement, just like some "whole life" insurance policies. I work in Telecommunications and we are offered life insurance thru work. yeah...what an industry...they pay you to screw up....you hope for time off... |
