Will my pre existing condition be covered by insurance at my new job? |
I had a cardiomyopathy a couple of years ago which I fully recovered from, but still recieve follow up visits and echo-cardiograms, etc. I am switching jobs and I am wondering if there will be any problems having a lapse in insurance coverage for the couple of months before I am able to enroll at my new job? Someone told me that it would not be covered if I went more than 2 months, and someone else said that it doesn't matter if it is a group insurance... The laws created when Clinton was in office state that you have to have continuous coverage for a pre-existing condition to be covered. You cannot go more than 60 days without coverage, so if you think that's going to happen, then you need to elect the cobra plan for a few months. Doesn't matter if it's group insurance or not anymore. If you don't get cobra, then you will not have your pre-existing conditions covered for up to one year after enrollment in the new plan. Insurance Companies will treat you like you have had the plauge if you have a pre existing condition. There may be exceptions to the rule, but in all my years I've never heard of one! It may not be covered but this is something you need to ask your human resources person when you go to work. They can call the insurance company if they don't know and find out for you. Each insurance is different. In my experience, group insurances are more likely to have no problem with pre-existing conditions, especially if it is a big company with hundreds of workers. You just have to join during the "open enrollment" period, which is usually one month of the year, or so. |
