A question regarding having no medical insurance in America?

I'm from UK and we have the NHS which is free healthcare as you probably know. I see questions answered on her about medication etc and sometimes people say I can't get this or that as I have no medical insurance. What happens if someone is ill and has no insurance have you got any kind of free treatment schemes or not?

Usually not. People can be in debt for years paying off costly medical bills. If a person is elderly he can qualify for Medicare or if a person is considered at poverty level he can apply for Medicaid. Both are government run programs.
Poverty level for a family of four is a yearly income of less that $18,850.
The problem as I see it is that health insurance is in the hands of corporations and corporations are first obligated to their shareholders.
I think it's a true disgrace. People don't go to the dr. b/c their afraid that it'll cost too much or don't take their meds b/c they can't afford them but no one seems to want to take on the issue. Source(s): Tax-paying American struggling to pay for needed meds. (Note the cynicism :-)
It depends on whether or not that person qualifies for Medicaid which is an insurance for low income persons. They will cover medical treatments, some meds, if they meet a certain criteria income wise. But unfortunately, there are millions that fall in the cracks, they either make just over the guideline for Medicaid, but too little to afford insurance themselves.
Not really, but if you are "poor" enough their is Medicare. Which is a government health insurance. The better doctors don't usually participate though so you have to go to some hack.
Meidcare is a gov't run "insurance" for the elderly, and Medicaid is for those in poverty. Most people get their insurance through their employer or other group (thus "group insurance"), and generally the employer pays a portion of the insurance premiums, with the individual picking up the rest.

Individual policies are available - but they tend to be more expensive and have more exclusions.
you die. thousands have. sucks, huh?
The standard trick, if you're sick enough, is to go to the emergency room, claim you have no insurance, no money and no assets, and try to get free treatment. Not a particularly decent thing to do, if you can afford a computer and an ISP, but lots of folks who aren't well off do it, e.g. illegals.
That's a part of the reason why insurance is so expensive--those that have it are subsidizing medical care for those who don't.
