If I have private medical insurance should I still register with a GP at my arrival in theUK for NHS purposes?

How do you go about registereing with a General Practitioner? I have private medical insurance that is accepted by 2 GP's in the British city where I will be living; however, the stipulation is I have to pay all expenses up front first, and the health insurance company in the USA will later reimburse me.

Can I sign up for free NHS coverage with a doctor who takes private medical insurance, or do these type of physicians usually not take part in the free NHS plan?

I'm told more and more doctors in the UK are shying away from taking on new NHS patients these days. Is this true? Is it that difficult these days to register with a GP on the free NHS programme?

Most GPs still do not see any private patients in UK, a number see some and there are a few totally private GPs. It would probably be quicker and easier to register with an HHS GP. He can then see you and arrange for any referrals that are needed to take place in the private sector. Source(s): GP for more years than I care to remember

The best thing to do is contact the local Primary Care Trust (pct).
They can tell you what practices
are taking on NHS patients as well as dentists and other healthcare things.
