I am a British citizen living in Canada. Do i need medical insurance when i visit Britain.? NHS care is based on residence, not citizenship or domicile. You will NOT be covered by the NHS unless you are a British RESIDENT, an EU RESIDENT or a RESIDENT of a country with a reciprocal healthcare arrangement (reciprocal arrangements are automatic in the EU). Canada does not have such an arrangement, so you will need insurance regardless of your citizenship. Yes your Canadian insurance only pays what would be charged here..not sure if you can use british insurance if not a resident . Call some one over there to be sure.. No, you are covered by the NHS as a British citizen so you can see the doctor for free and will be treated in hospital for free in case of accident and emergency. In addition, some countries have reciprocal health care arrangements with Britain where each country will treat the other's citizens under the national health system. It's possible that Canada is one so if that's the case you would be doubly covered. Of course, if you fall ill while on the flight or if you make a side trip elsewhere in Europe then that's a different story. (Some European countries have reciprocal arrangements with Britain but not all). My view is that travel insurance is so cheap that it's worth getting anyway. You can probably get an annual policy and it will cover you for loss of bags etc as well as any medical cover. I am an Australian citizen living in London so I have looked into this for my own needs. Are you absolutely sure you are a British Citizen? If you are a British Citizen it means you hold a red British passport that has the words "BRITISH CITIZEN" on the back page after your name, or you have the right to hold one of these passports. If you were a British Citizen you would understand about the NHS and wouldn't be asking this question. |
