Is there some kind of medical pet insurance in your country?

Just wondering, because of questions where a person cannot afford to take their pet to a doctor.
Are there alternative, inexpensive options, such as government sponsored animals clinics, or NGOs?
What about shots, such as rabies? Are there places where you can take your pets to be vaccinated for free? Or spayed?
Just curious.
Thank you in advance for your answers.

yes here in the U.K we have got an organisation called the P.D.S.A. peoples dispensery for sick animals.. its run entirely on contributions..and the R.S.P.C.A royal society for the prevention of cruelty to animals ... also contribution funded... and finally we do have various insurance plans for pets here too ...we are very pet orientated here too ....
All the answers were very informative and to the point. That is why I couldn"t choose and put it in voting.
I don't think money should be an issue when a person needs the company of a pet. Long live the P.D.S.A.!

My grandmother has MediCare and so does her cat. I'm confused.

The US has a lot of pet insurance companies. Unfortunately, they do not work like a regular health insurance policy. Most do not cover routine shots or spay/neuter. Many vets do not accept these policies, so the pet owner must still pay out of pocket in an emergency and wait for reimbursement from the insurance company.

There are some chain animal hospitals that offer programs for a $50 enrollment and $15 per month fee. This will give the owner free office visits, and a few free services.

Many cities sponsor rabies and spay/neuter clinics, but they are seldom free. The fee is usually greatly reduced. The local animal shelter will never turn you away if you come to them with a sick or injured pet.
Our dog is insured with Pets Best, and we are *very* happy with our coverage (which would include spay/neuter and wellness visits including vaccinations if we wanted to add on that option -- good for the person who likes having his dog's teeth cleaned on a regular basis).

Most (if not all) of the companies I checked were on a reimbursement basis, but we chose Pets Best because they have the highest limits in the industry and no nasty benefit schedule (insurance term that some companies use to pay only certain amounts for different procedures -- hard to keep track of 500+ amounts).

I never want to be faced with the decision to deny my dog (or cat) medical treatment again. I was once and it was just horrible.
