Do police officers have free medical insurance?

I know that most departments offer free medical insurance for police, but do they also offer free medical insurance for spouses and children? Would they still offer it to you and your spouse and children after retiring from the force?

Thank you!

First no many departments do not offer FREE medical insurance but it is just like many other jobs, the employee has to pay a portion of it. There are many departments that don't even offer insurnace or any benifits to officers, our county police did not even have any insurance till this year, and it is a very min policy for only the officer.

so please you are completely misinformed, maybe your local department officers the insurnace free, but this is not nearly the way alot of departments do it.

As for dependent insurance, just like most work places the officer has to pay that portion or at least part of that portion to get the coverge.

At retirement, again it will depend, if you are speaking of at 65, then no, all company insurance ends at 65 and you have to take medicare and buy your own suppliment,
If you are disucssing before 65, it will just depend on the regulatoinsof that departmetn
That all depends on the department. The one I worked for, it was free for the employees, and was about 110. for medical and dental for my kids to be added. The bigger department with more employees, or any job for that matter, the cheaper the insurance usually is.
What country are you from. Are you saying that some people have to pay for medical treatment? I would get out quick if that is the case.
It depends, it's up to each city council to decide and set the rules for benefit packages for the police department in their city. Many include free benefits for families, but with the cost of insurance going up more nad more are requiring some cost sharing on medical insurance costs. It would be best for you to contact the department you are considering and inquiring about benefit packages, including retirement. There are some places and cities where growth has exploded and they are desperate for new officers and are increasing benefits and pay packages. It's worth looking into, Scottsdale Arizona happens to be really pulling out all the stops for new officers. I'm sure other cities will soon follow this trend and retention policies will be boosted in the future.

While retirement packages often include your spouse, children are often only covered through the college years if they are in school full time, beyond that benefits are not usually extended unless they are considered dependents like if they are disabled or have down syndrome, etc.
This is not a yes or no answer each department, county, state etc is different. With the rising cost of insurance there are not as many any more that offer "free" medical insurance most make you pay something or they give it free to you and you pay some for your family. That being said the public safety field is known for normally having very good health benefits.
I can tell you that here we have great insurance compared to most others in our state.

It is not free but close enough. We get full medical, dental, eye, and prescription benefits for our whole family. It cost us very little out of pocket, figures out to about $100 a month or less for most. It cost me absolutely nothing to go to the dentist, would cost nothing to go the eye doctor, and we have small copays on all doctors visits and prescriptions. We expect to start paying more with the next contract negotiations as the cost to the county just keeps rising.

I believe our State Troopers gets 100% coverage for "free" whereas many of our municipal officers have to pay quite a bit for theirs. It varies a lot.
Wow, if that's true, I need to transfer ! It's not free, but I have seen private or smaller companies and their costs are extremely high ! It's not bad as long as you don't have a spouse or family, then it starts to get expensive, over $100 a\ month.
It can be, mine is technically free, I receive a stipend as part of my paycheck which is intended for a city medical plan, if I had dependants it would be over the stipend and I would pay a little out of pocket.

Some agencies offer lifetime medical after retirement as a perk.
