Do you have to have medical Insurance? Is it compulsory? |
I notice lots of questions on health issues.Do you have to have Medical insurance before you can get treated? Or do you have a welfare system for the poorer people? I'm referring to the U.S.A. Here is my understanding of how things are: Doctor's offices can refuse to see you if you have no insurance and are unable to pay for the service the same day. Emergency rooms are not legally allowed to refuse service to anyone, regardless of insurance or ability to pay. Many people get their medical insurance through their employment. We do have a welfare system for the poorer people. The government funded health insurance is called Medicaid. This is my personal experience: Some people are left without any medical insurance. Like me. I work as a part-time seasonal employee about 4 or 5 months out of the year. This does not offer me any insurance. The other months I'm a stay at home mom. Our household makes too much money for me to qualify for Medicaid (unless I'm pregnant, which I'm not). We make far too little money for us to buy private health insurance for me. Lots of people are in a similar situation. Two friends of mine work nearly full time at a locally owned restaurant and don't get health insurance there. They don't qualify for any help (despite working for minimum wage and being dirt poor). In my opinion, there is something wrong with the system. Everyone should have access to some kind of affordable medical coverage. It seems like it should almost be a human right or something. But my opinion is probably biased because of my personal situation. It's either insurance or a credit card . . . Anyone in the US can get medical treatment by going to an emergency room. They can't legally turn you away. Whether you pay for it or not is up to you. Unpaid medical bills (as opposed to unpaid car payments, mortgage payments, etc.) do not affect your credit rating. |
