How does a person get medical treatment / evaluation without insurance? |
The public health department will not provide the type of exam that this person needs to find out what's wrong with him. He needs a private doctor, but do they see people without insurance and how much will it cost for a cat-scan, mri? You need to have a REASON to obtain extensive evaluation. If you want a full CT exam, I think some cities have these things set up in the mall. About $400 does it. The problem with those is they find "false positives" things that appear to require investigation, but turn out to be nothing. The investigation often is expensive and risky...so in total you were probably better off without the scan in the first place. There are community health clinics in some communities that typically give free or sliding scale rates. There are volunteer clinics in some communities. I think the bottom line is that some medical provider needs to be in agreement that more testing is warranted. Until you have that component, you have nothing. So pay for an office visit to get whatever you have on your mind, worked out. Most offices will allow even an office visit to be paid over time if you need it. Good luck. Addendum: It is a misnomer that the ER must treat you. Per EMTALA. ER's must EVALUATE you and determine whether your condition is stable and provide treatment to stablize your condition, if it is not. If they are unable to stabilize your condition, then they must transfer you to a place that can. They are not obligated to treat a chronic condition like cancer, for instance, unless, it somehow worsened or was causing complications. They cannot turn you away. There are some doctors that will let you do a payment plan, but you will have to call around to search for them. |
